Dr Charlotte Houldcroft is a molecular biologist interested in how humans and our pathogens evolve: a genetic arms race in which changes to the human genome give protection against a pathogen, putting pressure on the pathogen to also change genetically to avoid the human immune system. She is especially interested in the herpesviruses, ancient viruses which infect primates and cause diseases ranging from cold sores and chicken pox to encephalitis and certain cancers.
